SDA Home Assistive Technology Guide
Plan the home around the person’s everyday activities before choosing devices. This guide is for SDA providers, property owners and project teams coordinating accessible home controls with registration and dwelling requirements.

Prepare an assistive technology brief

Start with the resident’s goals
Identify the tasks the person wants to control, preferred interfaces and who else needs access. Consider how preferences can be communicated and changed after moving in.

Coordinate the home and technology design
Bring the architectural team, relevant OT or AT adviser, SDA assessor and technology designer into the discussion. Identify which features belong to the dwelling and which are individual equipment requests.

Document operation and fallback
For each proposed function, record who controls it, what happens during a power or internet outage and how manual or emergency operation works. Assign responsibility for testing the agreed behaviour.

Agree on handover and maintenance
Plan demonstrations, accessible instructions, account ownership, support contacts, periodic checks and how faults will be reported. Confirm costs and ongoing subscriptions before accepting the proposal.
Technology questions to discuss with the project team

Registration, design certification and dwelling enrolment
The Commission’s SDA registration group is 0131 and uses a certification audit. This provider audit is separate from assessment of a dwelling against the SDA Design Standard.
An independent SDA assessor certifies the design and completed dwelling at the relevant stages. The NDIA makes the enrolment decision; design certification does not guarantee enrolment. Confirm the nominated design category and requirements with the project team before construction.
Check funding before ordering
An equipment quote or professional recommendation does not guarantee NDIS funding. Funding depends on the participant, evidence and applicable support rules. Confirm what advice, quotes and approval are needed, and who will pay, before ordering. Standard security equipment is not automatically disability-related assistive technology.
